ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (January 19, 2022) – Athletes have reached the finish line of the 2022 AAU Southwest Indoor Championship. 200 athletes traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 15
th with hopes of starting the AAU Indoor Track season on the right foot.
Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas were all represented at the Albuquerque Convention Center over the weekend, drawing in nearly 500 spectators. 18 teams in total made the trip with a chance to be the first athletes to compete on the brand new Mondo Track surface in the convention center.
“Great way to kick off the AAU Track & Field Indoor season,” said Reggie Williams, Meet Director. “Overall, a great event and I’m looking forward to the next event in Albuquerque, New Mexico.”
Girls and boys competed in age groups as young as 8 and under, all the way up to the 17 & 18 year old division. Athletes participated across 7 track events (60m, 60m Hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m), 2 relay races (4x200m, 4x400m), and 5 field events (High jump, Long jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Pole Vault).
Team 44.30 Track Club and Western Slope Warrior Elite each took home first place prizes for their relay races. Carsen Burns of REAL Training Colorado raced away with the fastest time in a final, posting a 7.19 second finish in the 17-18 year old 60 Meter Dash. Sydney Cowan jumped farther than the rest with a 9.91 meter triple jump to win the 17-18 year old Women’s division.
