RECAP: AAU Track and Field Primary Championships

Six records were rewritten in the two-day event for the eight and under track meet, the AAU Primary Championships.

ORLANDO, Fla. – 484 starting guns later and the Amateur Athletic Union put a cap on the AAU Track and Field Primary Championships. The two-day event saw 753 athletes, ranging from five years old to eight years. The meet consisted of 55m ,100m ,200m and 400m sprints, 800m and 1500m runs, 40m hurdles, long jump, shot put, turbo javelin and the triathlon, as well as the 4x1 and 4x4 relays. A total of 171 teams participated this year with 63 boys teams competing in multi events and 60 girls teams, and 42 teams ran in the relay events.

Six records were broken this year. Makayla Tarrant of Coach Sam Burley set a new record for the five and under Girls 400m with a time of 1:35.36. Elise Pridgeon broke the six-year-old girls 400m by six seconds, running a 1:17.29. Omar Thomas Jr. of Track Club of Fort Lauderdale set the eight-year-old boys 400m with a time of 1:05.37. Myles Clay of Charlotte Heat ran an 8.06 second 40m hurdles, cutting 0.20 seconds off the hold record. Savannah Davis threw a new record in the six-year-old girls Shot Put, tossing a 14’ 9”. Serenity Prior of Pahokee Elite set a new record in the five and under girls 800m with a time of 3:13.73, 20 seconds faster than the previous record.

The AAU Primary Championships awarded over 624 medals, including 78 gold. Eleven athletes made two trips to the top of the podium this year, and three winners clenched the gold medal third times – Cyprian Reid of Olympia Track: six-year-old boys Triathlon, 800m, 400m; Stacy McAllister of Ohio Heat: 5 and under boys 100m, 200m, 55m; Chase Staten of Team Blaze: six-year-old boys 100m, 200m 55m.

This event is the last chance for athletes nine years of age and older to qualify for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Greensboro, North Carolina, July 24 – August 3.
