ORLANDO, Fla. – The biggest track and field event in Florida wrapped up on Saturday, July 13. The seven-day meet hosted 426 teams, consisting of 5,152 athletes in feats on the field and around the track. The first two days were ruled by the multi-events which saw a total of 288 athletes in the pentathlon, heptathlon and decathlon. Day three and four were dominated by the 100m and 200m preliminaries. A total of 211 100m and 259 200m heats were started, capping the third highest participation in the last five years. Finals followed in Days four through seven.
Florida held the highest number of participants with 1,492. Texas was the second highest with 560, and Georgia was third with 495 athletes. 13 teams also hailed from outside the country, including Bahamas, Jamaica, Canada, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The competition proved intense as 38 records fall this year, with three athletes setting multiple records. Carlie Weiser, 14, from LC Express tossed a ginormous 15.5m/51’1” throw in the shot put. She would then come back in the discus event and throw a 39.35m, 129’ 1” for the record. Juliah Bolden, 10, from Miami Gardens Xpress set records for the 100m and 200m, running 13.08 and 26.61 respectively. Prentice Jones Jr. shattered two records for himself in the 9-year-old boys division running 26.03 and 1:00.04 in the 200m and 400m sprints, respectively.
47 athletes made multiple trips to the top of the awards podium, 14 of them were three time winners, and Mekhi Gammons of Miami Gardens Express paced the group with four gold medals in the boys 4x800m relay, 4x400m relay, 200m and 400m.
The Miami Gardens Xpress Track Club took home the overall team title after breaking a total of 27 records this year. They also defended their title for the boy’s 4x400m relay record and all the Sprint Medley records.
