RECAP: 2022 AAU Track & Field Primary Nationals

Approximately 600 athletes, from the ages of five and under to eight years old, competed in the 2022 AAU Primary Nationals on July 11 and 12 – making it the largest Primary Nationals to date.

Orlando, Fla. – Approximately 600 athletes converged at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando for the 2022 AAU Track & Field Primary Nationals on July 11 and 12 – making it the largest Primary Nationals to date.

Twenty-two states were represented at this year's event, with Florida having the most entries with more than 300 athletes.

The best runners and field competitors from the ages of five and under to eight years old competed for an AAU national title and a chance to qualify for the upcoming 2022 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The top eight finishers and relay teams from each event qualified for the 56th AAU Junior Olympic Games, which are taking place July 29 through August 6. (Click here for more information on that event.)

Eight Primary National Championship records were broken after two days of fierce competition.

  • Kailer Flounory, of Tampa Xpress, broke the 5 and under Girls Long Jump record with a distance of 9-2. The previous record was an 8-4 set by Kaitlyn Oxceus in 2013.
  • Kingston Hamilton, of 5 Star Eagle, broke the 8 Year Old Boys Long Jump record with a distance of 14-6, beating the previous record of 13-6.5 set back in 2010 by Joseph Mosbey.
  • Jordyn Hampton, of Throw 2 Win, broke the record for 8 Year Old Girls Javelin with a throw of 67-10. The previous record was a 60-5 set in 2018 by Laila Jones.
  • Byran Drayton, of the Westchase Cheetahs, broke the record for 8 Year Old Boys Javelin with a throw of 85-9, beating the previous record of 78-8 set by Brett Shadrick in 2014.
  • Saleia Stowe, of Tri City Relays, broke the 6 Year Old Girls 400m record with a time of 1:17.20, beating the previous record of 1:17.29 set by Elise Pridgeon in 2019.
  • Kyleigh Bryant, of the Charlotte Panthers, broke the record for the 7 Year Old Girls 1500m with a time of 5:48.98. The previous record was 5:49.87 set by Jayla Flemons in 2017.
  • Masiah McGee, of Charger Elite, broke the 8 Year Old Boys 200m record with a time of 28.30, beating the previous record of 28.55 set by Jaren Hamilton in 2013.
  • Caiden Dorsett, of Charlotte Heat, broke the record in the 7 Year Old Boys 100m with a time of 14.48. The previous record was a 14.51 set in 2015 by Darious Gardner.

Two athletes accomplished the amazing feat of being triple winners. Saleia Stowe, of Tri City Relays, won the 6 Year Old Girls 400m (where she broke the meet record), the 200m, and the 800m. Jaxson White, of Dragon's Youth TC, won the 5 and under Boys 400m, 200m, and 100m.
