VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The indoor AAU Track and Field season has crossed the finish line, ending with the AAU Indoor Nationals from March 3-5 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Around 3,000 athletes, from 35 different states and Canada, showed up in the hopes of taking home AAU gold.
Athletes were divided into age groups from 5-6 year olds through 17-18 year olds.
A wide range of events were showcased, from relay races, to 60-meter hurdles, 60m sprint, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, long jump, high jump, shot put, pole vault, and more.
In the boys' 17-18 year old pole vault competition, it was a hard fight to see who would land on top -- and the crowd loved it. Kenneth Byrd and Garett Boe both cleared 15 feet, but Kenneth Byrd took home the gold medal with a best attempt of 4.90m (16-3/4').
In the running events, Southern Sprinters Elite dominated in the boys' 4x200 relay -- winning the 10-year-old (1:58.72), 12-year-old (1:51.42), and 14-year-old (1:38.64) age divisions.
"I'm always amazed at what our track athlete's accomplish at AAU meets," said AAU Track and Field National Chair and 2nd Vice President Charles "Coach O" Oliver. "I'm honored and humbled that I was able to be at AAU Indoor Nationals to cheer our athletes on."
